Winter 2011

Planet Views

Welcome to the first edition of our quarterly newsletter, Planet Views. We're deeply involved with new developments, and keeping track of old ones in the IT security industry. And with all of our experience and vendor contacts we thought we'd like to share our knowledge with you.

If there's anything you'd like more information on we'll be happy to help, so please get in touch. And if it's something we can share we'll write it up here.

So please look out for Planet Views every quarter - and add us to your whitelist!

Best regards,

Unified Communications

Organisations large and small constantly look to find ways to maximise efficiency, productivity and value for money. Two areas of technology are combining to meet these needs - stop chaining staff to desks through live, mobile access to systems; and at the same time maximising the use of networks.

Unified communications (UC) is the buzz-word for achieving this, integrating communications, presence, telephony, video. services - and others. The concept is to allow an individual to send a message on one medium and have it delivered to the recipient in whichever medium is the most appropriate at the time - not necessarily how it was initially sent.

Data Leakage Prevention

Data Leakage or Loss Prevention (DLP) is becoming a high profile area for many organisations. With inadvertent loss of data having hit the national press, this kind of publicity is unwelcome for most.

However, many vendors claim DLP credentials, so how should the budget-restricted IT security manager go about choosing the most effective approach? The first step should be to perform a risk analysis to determine the technology areas that represent the most vulnerable areas

Armed with this knowledge, a discussion with an IT security specialist will help to make the right decisions in terms of which products make most sense. Many technologies could help, including those dealing with intrusion prevention, email & web filtering and end-point security. With so many products on offer it helps to have external assistance to identify the best fit.
